VC is the maximum air exhaled after maximum inhalation. Males: VC = 5.76×H − 0.026×A − 4.34. Females: VC = 4.43×H − 0.026×A − 2.89 (H in meters). VC declines with age and is reduced in restrictive lung diseases. Used for ventilator weaning assessment (VC > 10–15 mL/kg suggests ability to breathe independently).
