Estimate ABG from VBG values.
Arterial pH ≈ Venous pH + 0.03. Arterial pCO₂ ≈ Venous pCO₂ − 6 mmHg. HCO₃ is essentially the same. VBG pH correlates well with ABG pH (r = 0.95). VBG can screen for acidosis without arterial puncture. VBG cannot reliably assess oxygenation – PaO₂ requires ABG.
