Identify patients at risk of deterioration from vital signs.
The Modified Early Warning Score uses systolic BP, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, and AVPU consciousness level. MEWS ≥ 5 is associated with increased risk of ICU admission or death. Scores trigger escalation protocols: 0–2 routine care, 3–4 increased monitoring, ≥ 5 urgent medical review. Early detection of deterioration saves lives.
