Friedewald Equation

LDL = Total Cholesterol − HDL − (Triglycerides / 5). This formula is valid only when triglycerides are below 400 mg/dL. NCEP ATP III classifies LDL < 100 as optimal for most adults, with lower targets (<70) for very high-risk patients. Direct LDL measurement is preferred when triglycerides are elevated.
