Tree Value Calculator - Appraise a Tree's Monetary Value
Use the Trunk Formula Method from the Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers (CTLA) to estimate the appraised value of an individual tree.
Trunk Formula Method
Value = π × (DBH/2)² × Base Rate × Species Factor × Condition Factor × Location Factor
Understanding the Factors
- Base Rate — Local replacement cost per square inch of trunk cross section.
- Species Factor — Quality and desirability of the species (oak ≈ 0.9, silver maple ≈ 0.5).
- Condition — Health, structure, and form. A perfect tree = 1.0; declining tree may = 0.3.
- Location — Site, contribution to landscape, placement. Premium location ≈ 1.0; remote ≈ 0.4.
When to Use This
Tree appraisals are commonly used for insurance claims, casualty losses on taxes, lawsuits over construction damage, and municipal valuations. The CTLA Trunk Formula remains the U.S. standard.
