Llama Pregnancy and Care

Llamas (Lama glama) are induced ovulators — they ovulate in response to mating, not on a cycle. Gestation averages 350 days (11.5 months), similar to horses. They almost always deliver a single cria (baby), usually during morning hours. Crias weigh 20-35 lbs at birth and stand within an hour. Llamas are hardy livestock used as pack animals, fiber producers, and livestock guardians. Adult llamas weigh 250-450 lbs and live 15-25 years. They require minimal fencing (4 ft), basic shelter, and grass/hay diet with mineral supplements. Llamas are social — keep at least two together.
