Rate each factor 0 (worst) to 10 (best). Total ≥35 = acceptable QoL.
This scale by veterinary oncologist Dr. Alice Villalobos helps evaluate whether a pet with a serious illness is still enjoying a reasonable quality of life. Seven criteria are scored 0-10: Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility, and More Good Days Than Bad. A total of 35+ out of 70 suggests acceptable quality of life. Scores below 35 indicate suffering. This is a guide — not a definitive answer. Your veterinarian and your deep knowledge of your dog's personality should guide this most personal decision. Track scores over time; a consistent downward trend may be more meaningful than a single number.
